Committees

The NABCI-Canada Council creates committees as required. Each NABCI-Canada committee is comprised of at least one Council member, members of an organization represented on the Council and possibly members of organizations not represented on the Council.

Committees lead the coordination and support the delivery of actions outlined in the NABCI-Canada strategic work plan (coming soon).  Their purpose is to advance NABCI-Canada goals and undertake particular activities in support of its four roles. NABCI-Canada’s current committees include:

State of Canada’s Birds Steering Committee:

(will remain active until State of Canada’s Birds 2019 is published)

One of NABCI-Canada’s priorities is to coordinate the periodic production of the State of the Birds reports, which include the State of North America’s Birds and State of Canada’s Birds reports. This committee is in charge of analyzing the most up to date bird monitoring data for Canada using the best population modelling available and of summarizing their findings in a report. This report will include information on bird population trends and provides recommendations on where and how to invest in conservation efforts in Canada.

International Committee:

The International Committee is interested in advancing the following NABCI-Canada priority:

  • Assist cooperation on migratory bird conservation across the Western Hemisphere through existing, or by creating new, international agreements, partnerships or networks.

In order to advance this priority, the committee will make efforts to implement the actions established in the current NABCI-Canada Work Plan.

In addition, this committee will be the primary link with NABCI in the United States and Mexico in order to collaborate on full life cycle conservation for migratory birds.

Communications Committee:

One of NABCI-Canada’s priorities is to showcase success stories, best practices and interesting pilot projects that demonstrate progress, especially for bird groups at high risk. The Communications Committee will gather these stories to communicate positive and inspiring stories to the bird conservation community in Canada.

In addition, this committee will serve as an oversight mechanism to ensure that the different NABCI-Canada Council members are in agreement with the messages that are conveyed to the public.

Influence Policy Committee:

The Influence Policy Committee is interested in advancing the following NABCI-Canada priority:

  • Successfully influence invasive species policies and best practices for wetlands, grasslands and islands/seabirds.

In order to advance this priority, the committee will make efforts to implement the actions established in the current NABCI-Canada Work Plan.

In addition, this committee will strive to generally provide guidance and influence policies in order to advance bird conservation in Canada.
